Acoustic Emission from a Growing Crack

چکیده

An analytical method is being developed to determine the signature of an acoustic emission waveform from a growing crack and the results of this analysis are compared to experimentally obtained values. Within the assumptions of linear elastic fracture mechanics, a two dimensional model is developed to examine a semi-infinite crack that, after propagating with a constant velocity, suddenly stops. The analytical model employs an integral equationmethod for the analysis of problems of dynamic fracture mechanics. The experimental procedure uses an interferometric apparatus that makes very localized absolute measurements with very high fidelity and without acoustically loading the specimen.

On the Use of Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation for Welded Joints Damage Characterization

A series of tests have been conducted to investigate fatigue damage characterization in corroded welded steel plates using structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. Acoustic Emission (AE) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique with potential applications for locating and monitoring fatigue cracks in service. In the present work, AE is implemented to characterize damage during crack e...

Acoustic emission during fatigue of Ti-6AI-4V: incipient fatigue crack detection limits and generalized data analysis methodology

The fundamentals associated with acoustic emission monitoring of fatigue crack initiation and propagation of Ti-6AI-4V were studied. Acoustic emission can detect and locate incipient fatigue crack extensions of approximately 1 0 gm. The technique therefore can serve as a sensitive warning to material failure. There are three distinct stages during which acoustic emission is generated. These sta...

Damage Detection in Metal Structures Using Acoustic Emission

The structural components of many machines remain in service far beyond their designed lifetimes. This is especially true in the field of aerospace structures, where aircraft, wind turbines, satellites, and other components are expected to be in service for decades. Therefore, a good maintenance system is desired, allowing these structures further service use, while maintaining efficiency and r...

Modelling of Crack Growth Based Acoustic Emission Release in Aluminum Alloys

Various theories in the past have addressed the correlation of material properties and the respective acoustic emission release during fracture. Whilst these theories yield good predictions for fundamental relationships, they neglect the dynamic displacements during crack formation. This paper presents first results for a new acoustic emission crack source model based on a finite element modell...
